Farm Field Forage was born when we moved to Bennington in 2020. Cleaning up around our new home we noticed a struggling hydrangea with an invasive vine’s tendrils slowly choking it to death. As we learned more about our corner of southwestern Vermont and neighboring New York and Massachusetts, we discovered that although incredibly beautiful, like many places in rural America it had become home to some pesky invasives. And unwanted vines were growing and thriving on the farm.
If we started removing it to help the plants and trees thrive, could we do something with it? Could we repurpose it somehow? Would it make a wreath?
As we yanked out more and more vine from trees and hedgerows we experimented - making different bases and shapes, creating gardens, growing everlasting plants and flowers. On foraging hikes and ski trips around the farm we discovered wild gifts - feathers, nuts, cones, berries, nests. We included the most beautiful and unusual in our designs.
Friends encouraged us to offer wreaths for sale. We started to vend at farmers markets and events. Next came some custom requests to build and install large pieces. We offered garlands, totems, poseys, and decorated a chuppah with forage and flowers at an outdoor wedding, and…who knows what’s next?
We like being surprised by nature adventures and working toward a sustainable future- all the while learning, growing, and trying our best to remain present. We’re deeply grateful. Thank you family and friends - new and old - for the everlasting encouragement and support.
